Chill Casting Process
Are there claimed higher mechanical properties with the casting part, like greater expansions, the chill cast as well as the restricted die cast are applied.
A chill-mold is a metal permanent mold for the production of aluminium casting parts. Like with the sand casting, cores can be inserted in the casting form.
On the contrary to the sand casting, the chill cast process makes possible a multiple cast per casting form. The liquid metal is casted into the permanent form from above. There, it is important that the liquid metal can run out into every area of the permanent form before the solidification. The faster the solidification begins, the better is the joining of the casting part. The results of that chill casting, compared to the sand casting, are parts with finer joinings, a higher resistance, a higher accuracy grade and surface finish.
The parameters for the origin of a "usable" casting part are very complex. Therefore, a lot of know-how is needed reaching from the choice of the ideal forming process (sand casting, chill casting, die casting) to the construction of the tool, the choice of an appropriate alloy, the construction of the cores, the finishing of the cast, the mashining and so on...
